BartaBangla Report :: Bangabandhu’s Granddaughter Tulip Siddiq categorically said she did not want to join in dynasty politics in Bangladesh so she took part in British politics.
She came up with the assertion while talking to journalists at a press conference in London on Thursday.
On Sunday last, Tulip had been nominated as a candidate for the British opposition Labour Party from the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency for the United Kingdom’s next general election to be held in 2015.
In reply to a question, Tulip said, “My grandfather was a founder of Bangladesh, aunt Sheikh Hasina is the incumbent Prime Minister and if I joined in Bangladesh politics, you people would say it’s dynasty politics.”
Urging help and well wish, Tulip said, “I am a British, a Muslim and Bangladesh is my motherland.
Describing how she has come to this stage, Tulip Siddiq said, “At first I became councilor there and then became policy adviser to the Labour Party. And gradually I got the nomination as part of my efforts.”
Mentioning the first Bengali Member of British Parliament Roshnara Ali, Tulip said she inspired me like many others to join in British politics.
Sheikh Rehana, the mother of Tulip, who was also present at the function said, “I used to look for jobs desperately on the streets of Kilburn then as I had no place to stay in. My daughter was nominated there which place stayed beside me during that hard time.
All have done through Tulip’s own efforts and all credit goes to her so far, she added.
Later, she sought blessings for her daughter from all in the UK.
Tulip, daughter of Shafiq Siddiq and Sheikh Rehana, studied English literature for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University College of London.
She did a second Master’s in Politics, Policy and Government before pursuing a career in British politics.
