mahbubul alam hanifBartaBangla Desk :: Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Tuesday said directives have been given to authorities concerned to release senior BNP leaders those who were arrested from party’s headquarters on Monday. “So far we know, instruction has already been given to the authorities to release the senior BNP leaders,” he told reporters in front of AL office at Bangabandhu Avenue while taking part in anti-hartal programme.
He, said, “We don’t support detention of senior leaders from a political programme in no way though the BNP did it repeatedly when it was in power.” Attacks were carried out by entering the party office and senior leaders were arrested when they were in power, he added.
The AL leader said he doesn’t think that the BNP should enforce any hartal afresh unless they feel it necessary to protect the war criminals.
“In that case, we have nothing to say and we want to leave the matter to the people for consideration,” he added.
Justifying the police attacks, Hanif said opposition activists threw brickbats targeting police without any reason. They also exploded bombs, vandalised and set fire on some vehicles on the street. That’s why police dispersed the anarchists to keep the situation under control and protect the lives and properties of the people,” he said.
Claiming that Awami League never wants to resist the opposition by using police, Hanif, who is also special assistant to the Prime Minister, alleged that police raided the BNP office to arrest those who entered into the office after exploding bombs and setting fire on vehicles.
He also mentioned that police arrested them and recovered several bombs from the BNP office.
On searching operation from room to room by breaking locks, he said BNP leaders obstructed police from entering the room and tried to protect the anarchists which led the police to break locks to enter the rooms.
State Minister for Law Advoate Quamrul Islam said Monday’s activities of the opposition BNP proved its autocratic and terrorist nature in disguise of democracy.
“People will not accept terrorist activities from a democratic party and godfathers in disguise of leaders,” he said adding, people want to see them in prison.
Quamrul said police brought the situation with utmost patience.
AL leader Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, Habibur Rahman Siraj, MA Aziz, Foyez Uddin Miah, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Shah-e-Alam, among others, were present on the occasion.
