Yet another youth was shot dead in Jessore in the wee hours of Saturday barely a day after another such a killing in the district.
The deceased is Jahangir Alam, 35.
Police claim that Jahangir was shot dead during a gunfight between two terrorist groups.
The family’s victim, however, denied the police claim and said Jahangir and his younger brother Abid Hasan, 27, was picked up by the police from their home and the law enforcement shot Jahangir dead while Abid Hasan remains missing.
The police denied the allegations.
Earlier in the small hours of Friday, a youth named Hafizul Islam, 30, was shot dead. His family also alleged that he was picked up by the police and later shot to death.
The police denied this allegation as well.
Jahangir and Abid are sons of Nowsher Ali of Shantala Uttarpara village under Jessore sadar upazila. Jahangir, a trader of used sacks, was involved in ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) politics, according to his family.
Jahangir’s paternal uncle Abdur Rahman told the Prothom Alo, “The police came to Jahangir’s house around 1:30am in the early hours of Saturday with three vehicles and they picked up Jahangir and Abid.”
He said since then they were looking for the brothers but could not get any clue of their whereabouts.
“On Saturday morning, we came to know from one of our relatives who is an employee of Jessore General Hospital that the police left Jahangir’s body in the hospital,” said Jahangir’s uncle.
He said the police have not admitted the arrest of Abid until Saturday noon.
He said Jahangir fell victim to intra-party feud of Jessore AL.
Jahangir’s uncle alleged that the police had implicated him in different under-trial cases in the past, too.
Denying the allegations, Jessore Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Ilias Hossain said the police arrested neither Jahangir nor Abid.
He claimed that the law enforcement was tipped off around 1:30am that two terrorist groups were prepared to commit robbery in the Daulatdihi area of the district and the police rushed to scene only to see bullet-hit Jahangir lying on the spot.
The police officer claimed Jahangir succumbed to his bullet injuries on the way to the hospital.
