The ruling Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday said they are now intensely scrutinizing the purpose of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s London tour to determine whether she is getting involved in hatching any conspiracy during the visit.

“The UK unit of AL is keeping eyes on every movement of Khaleda Zia in London. Everything — such as where Khaleda Zia is going, with whom she is holding meetings and maintaining communications have been put under the scanner,” she said after coming out of a meeting of AL secretariat members at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi.

Replying to a query about the BNP’s proposal of a supportive government for holding the next general election, he said, “The polls will be held as per the constitution and the constitution empowers the Election Commission (EC) to hold the election. It is possible to hold a fair election under a neutral EC.”

“The people cannot bring the BNP in power again as they know what it (BNP) did when it was in power,” he said, adding that BNP can never be substitute of the AL as it has been resorting to the politics of killing and repression.

The meeting held detailed discussions on holding month-long programs marking the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandu Sheikh Mujubur Rahman.

Among others, AL Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Enamul Haque Shamim, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Information and Research Secretary Afzal Hossain, Forest and Environment Secretary Delwar Hossain and Deputy Publicity and Publication Secretary Aminul Islam were present at the meeting.
