Former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will lead her party in its talks on reconstitution of the election commission with president Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban on 18 December.

The names of 10 members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) delegation headed by Khaleda were sent to the president’s house on Thursday.

The opposition party, which boycotted the 2014 general elections fearing rigging, is likely to propose names of eminent citizens to form a search committee for the next election commission as the current one expires in February 2017.

The issue of a polls-time government, a long-standing demand of the BNP after the Awami League scrapped the constitutional arrangement through the 15th amendment of the constitution, may also come up for discussion with the president.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and standing committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamir Uddin Sircar, Mahbubur Rahman, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury are also members of the BNP team.

Three assistant office secretaries of the BNP handed over the list of names of the BNP delegation to Bangabhaban.

The president has convened the meeting as part of his initiative to invite all registered political parties to a series of talks on reconstitution of the election commission.

On 18 November, BNP leader Khaleda Zia placed 13-point demand for formation of the commission based on consensus as well as holding free and fair general elections in the country.
