BartaBangla Desk :: Former Jamaat ameer Ghulam Azam Monday filed an appeal with the Supreme Court (SC) against the 90-year jail conviction awarded to him by ICT-1 for committing crimes against humanity.
After filing the appeal advocate Tajul Islam, one of the counsels of Ghulam Azam, told reporters that they moved the appeal with the related branch of the apex court seeking acquittal of his client from conviction.
He claimed that the ICT-1 “has failed” to deliver proper judgement against Azam as the prosecution could not prove any of the allegations against Azam.
The ICT-1 verdict “is bad in law and as such need to be set aside,” he added.
On July 15, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 handed down 90 years imprisonment to Ghulam Azam for his involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
The 91-year-old Azam was found guilty in all five charges against him and received 10 years’ jail term each for conspiracy and planning, 20 years each for incitement and complicity, while 30 years’ imprisonment for murder.
