A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist was killed in a gunfight between two factions of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League’s (AL) student wing in Sylhet Beanibazar Government College on Monday.

Party insiders and witnesses said activists of the BCL’s Pallab group and Pavel group locked into a fierce gunbattle over establishing dominance on the college campus.

The deceased is Khaled Ahmad Litu, 23, a worker of the BCL.

Talking to Prothom Alo, Sylhet’s additional police super Sugyan Chakma confirmed the death of Khaled in shooting. He said the police are investigating the matter.

Khaleda died on the spot during the gunfight between the rival factions of the ruling party’s student body.

The police recovered the body and took it to the upazila health complex. Health complex physician Masum Ahmad said they believe Khaled might have died of excess bleeding from his head hit by bullet.

UNB reported that the clash ensued between two groups – Pavel Mahmud, leader of district BCL unit and Abul Kashem Pallab, former joint convener of upazila BCL unit – in the morning.

Both groups exchanged fire during the clash, Beanibazar police station officer-in-charge Chandan Kumar Chakrabortty told the news agency.

Litu, the activist of Pavel group, received bullet on his head and died on the spot, the OC was quoted to have said.
