Climate Tracker is launching a very exciting opportunity for young journalists in South Asia. Five emerging environment journalists will be selected from different countries in the region to report extensively on the topic of fossil fuels and energy transitions. Your reporting can win you the chance to attend COP25 in Chile this December.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re looking for people who are deeply committed to writing about climate change and the environment and can get their articles published through a regional, national or international media organisation.<\/p>\n
Applications Close: 24 June\u00a02019 <\/strong><\/p>\n Shortlisting candidates and Interviews: June 24-29 <\/strong><\/p>\n Announcing winners: July 3 <\/strong><\/p>\n Fellows to start working on stories: July 8<\/strong><\/p>\n They are creating a South Asia regional Hub englobing India<\/span>, <\/span>Bangladesh<\/span>, <\/span>Bhutan<\/span>, <\/span>Nepal<\/span>, <\/span>Sri Lanka<\/span>, <\/span>Pakistan and Afghanistan that will largely be focusing on bringing attention to major coal and fossil fuel projects<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n There is a massive growth in coal plants<\/span>, <\/span>with an even larger amount in the pre<\/span>–<\/span>permit stage<\/span>, <\/span>largely due to investments coming from the Chinese investment belt<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n Between 2016 and 2019<\/span>, <\/span>China invested US<\/span>$<\/span>2<\/span>.<\/span>59 billion in Pakistan<\/span>, <\/span>US<\/span>$<\/span>2<\/span>.<\/span>55 billion in Sri Lanka<\/span>, <\/span>US<\/span>$<\/span>1<\/span>.<\/span>34 billion in Nepal and US<\/span>$<\/span>2<\/span>.<\/span>10 billion in Myanmar<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n The government in Bangladesh<\/span>, <\/span>for instance<\/span>, <\/span>is aiming its energy growth on coal<\/span>–<\/span>based power increasing from 2<\/span>% <\/span>to over 50<\/span>% <\/span>of the country<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s electricity supply by 2022<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n These countries are not only homes to major fossil fuel projects, but also critical windows of influence where journalism can influence public opinion and policy. <\/b><\/p>\n By working closely with journalists in the region we aim to put the dirty power investments on the media agenda<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and demonstrate any opportunities to invest in cleaner sources of energy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n – <\/span>Cover the unexplored angles of coal projects <\/span>– <\/span>their impacts<\/span>, <\/span>repercussions<\/span>;
