ARROW & DFPA l<\/span><\/span>aunch<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> the <\/span><\/span>Women and Earth Initiative (WORTH) – a CSO led innovation fund initiative<\/span><\/span> – <\/span><\/span>to tackle climate change <\/span><\/span>&<\/span><\/span> impact women\u2019s lives in Asia Pacific.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The Asian Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW) and the Danish Family Planning Association (DFPA) <\/span>have<\/span> jointly <\/span>launch<\/span>ed<\/span> an innovation <\/span>programme<\/span> and fund <\/span>today<\/span> (Tuesday)<\/span> in Katowice, Poland,<\/span> to tackle the catastrophic impact of climate change on women<\/span> and girl<\/span>s<\/span>\u2019<\/span> sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). <\/span><\/p>\n

ARROW, a Malaysia-based NGO that champions women and young people\u2019s SRHR<\/span>, and DFPA, the Danish member association of <\/span>the <\/span>International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), <\/span>launched<\/span> the <\/span>Women & Earth Initiative (WORTH)<\/span>, o<\/span>n<\/span> the sidelines of <\/span>the <\/span>2<\/span>4th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) or COP 24<\/span> in Poland<\/span>. The objective of WORTH is to create a platform, where creative and motivated environmental and climate change civil society <\/span>organisation<\/span>s<\/span> (CSO)<\/span> can develop new<\/span> and<\/span> integrated solutions to<\/span> the cross-cutting issues of<\/span> gender <\/span>in<\/span>equality, <\/span>lack of <\/span>SRHR and<\/span> needs for<\/span> climate change adaptation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClimate change exacerbates the challenges that many poor and <\/span>marginalised<\/span> women and girls are already facing due to lack of gender equality – including lack of respect, protection and fulfillment of their sexual and reproductive health and rights,\u201d said <\/span>Sivananthi<\/span> Thanenthiran<\/span>, ARROW\u2019s Executive Director. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an urgent need for action to prevent SRHR-related health impacts, unplanned pregnancies, violations of rights, and to make families resilient to changes in their everyday lives as a result of climate change. We <\/span>believe we have<\/span> to tackle these through innovative solutions. \u00a0With WORTH, we are creating a space where new ideas can emerge, grow and turn into actions for equitable and sustainable development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

WORTH would initially focus on climate change and environmental CSOs from four of the most disaster-prone countries in Asia Pacific. \u201c<\/span>Currently it will be implemented in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan and the Philippines as they are <\/span>experiencing devastating consequences from climate change,\u201d said Cristina Hanson, International Director from DFPA.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We are looking for additional funding, which would also cover East Africa, where the situation is also dire.<\/span> WORTH offers an innovative and holistic approach to a complex and cross-sectoral development issue with massive potential for mutual impact,\u201d <\/span>Ms<\/span> Hanson added<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once CSOs apply, 10-15 participants will be selected to be part of the five-month<\/span> WORTH<\/span> innovation<\/span> training<\/span>, consisting of online and physical workshops<\/span>, where new ideas for integrating <\/span>gender equality, SRHR and climate change adaptation efforts will be developed, tested and improved<\/span>. After completi<\/span>ng<\/span> the <\/span>training<\/span>, <\/span>participants become eligible to apply for grants from the<\/span> WORTH<\/span>fund to give life to<\/span> realisation<\/span> and implementation of<\/span> their innovati<\/span>ve idea that has been developed during the training<\/span>. <\/span>Each selected participant can <\/span>obtain<\/span> funding from USD10,00 to USD 25,000 to implement their idea within the span of one year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fund, which will run until 2021, will support the realisation and implementation of innovative projects developed during the labs. The end goal is to analyse these ideas and scale them up for innovative projects regionally and internationally so we can work on global solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is evolving at an unprecedented speed with ever-changing and complex global and political challenges that demand new solutions <\/span>that <\/span>cut across sectors. And the goal of WORTH is<\/span> to do<\/span> exactly that. We also want <\/span>policy makers and authorities at the national, regional and international levels to integrate<\/span> gender equality and<\/span> SRHR into policies, plans and budgets for environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation,\u201d said Ms <\/span>Thanenthiran<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n
