{"id":6102,"date":"2018-12-11T11:29:34","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T11:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bartabangla.com\/english\/?p=6102"},"modified":"2018-12-11T11:29:34","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T11:29:34","slug":"arrow-dfpa-launched-the-worth-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bartabangla.com\/english\/arrow-dfpa-launched-the-worth-program\/","title":{"rendered":"ARROW &#038; DFPA launched the WORTH program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ARROW &amp; DFPA l<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">aunch<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Women and Earth Initiative (WORTH) &#8211; a CSO led innovation fund initiative<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8211; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to tackle climate change <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&amp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> impact women\u2019s lives in Asia Pacific.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\">The Asian Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW) and the Danish Family Planning Association (DFPA) <\/span><span class=\"s4\">have<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">jointly <\/span><span class=\"s4\">launch<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> an innovation <\/span><span class=\"s4\">programme<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and fund <\/span><span class=\"s4\">today<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> (Tuesday)<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> in Katowice, Poland,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> to tackle the catastrophic impact of climate change on women<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and girl<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s8\">ARROW, a Malaysia-based NGO that champions women and young people\u2019s SRHR<\/span><span class=\"s8\">, and DFPA, the Danish member association of <\/span><span class=\"s8\">the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), <\/span><span class=\"s8\">launched<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Women &amp; Earth Initiative (WORTH)<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, o<\/span><span class=\"s4\">n<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the sidelines of <\/span><span class=\"s4\">the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">2<\/span><span class=\"s8\">4th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) or COP 24<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">in Poland<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. The objective of WORTH is to create a platform, where creative and motivated environmental and climate change civil society <\/span><span class=\"s4\">organisation<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> (CSO)<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">can develop new<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> integrated solutions to<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the cross-cutting issues of<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> gender <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in<\/span><span class=\"s4\">equality, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">lack of <\/span><span class=\"s4\">SRHR and<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> needs for<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> climate change adaptation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s4\">\u201cClimate change exacerbates the challenges that many poor and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">marginalised<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> women and girls are already facing due to lack of gender equality &#8211; including lack of respect, protection and fulfillment of their sexual and reproductive health and rights,\u201d said <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Sivananthi<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">Thanenthiran<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, ARROW\u2019s Executive Director. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s4\">\u201cThere is an urgent need for action to prevent SRHR-related health impacts, unplanned pregnancies, violations of rights, and to make families resilient to changes in their everyday lives as a result of climate change. We <\/span><span class=\"s4\">believe we have<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> to tackle these through innovative solutions. \u00a0With WORTH, we are creating a space where new ideas can emerge, grow and turn into actions for equitable and sustainable development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s4\">WORTH would initially focus on climate change and environmental CSOs from four of the most disaster-prone countries in Asia Pacific. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Currently it will be implemented in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan and the Philippines as they are <\/span><span class=\"s4\">experiencing devastating consequences from climate change,\u201d said Cristina Hanson, International Director from DFPA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s10\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s10\">We are looking for additional funding, which would also cover East Africa, where the situation is also dire.<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">WORTH offers an innovative and holistic approach to a complex and cross-sectoral development issue with massive potential for mutual impact,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Ms<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> Hanson added<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s4\">Once CSOs apply, 10-15 participants will be selected to be part of the five-month<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> WORTH<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> innovation<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> training<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, consisting of online and physical workshops<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, where new ideas for integrating <\/span><span class=\"s4\">gender equality, SRHR and climate change adaptation efforts will be developed, tested and improved<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. After completi<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ng<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">training<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">participants become eligible to apply for grants from the<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> WORTH<\/span><span class=\"s4\">fund to give life to<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">realisation<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and implementation of<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> their innovati<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ve idea that has been developed during the training<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Each selected participant can <\/span><span class=\"s4\">obtain<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> funding from USD10,00 to USD 25,000 to implement their idea within the span of one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">The fund, which will run until 2021, will support the realisation and implementation of innovative projects developed during the labs. The end goal is to analyse these ideas and scale them up for innovative projects regionally and internationally so we can work on global solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cThe world is evolving at an unprecedented speed with ever-changing and complex global and political challenges that demand new solutions <\/span><span class=\"s4\">that <\/span><span class=\"s4\">cut across sectors. And the goal of WORTH is<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> to do<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> exactly that. We also want <\/span><span class=\"s4\">policy makers and authorities at the national, regional and international levels to integrate<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> gender equality and<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> SRHR into policies, plans and budgets for environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation,\u201d said Ms <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Thanenthiran<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s12\">About ARROW<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s8\">The Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women is a regional non-profit women\u2019s organisation based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
