Astronomers say they have detected \u2018strange signals\u2019 coming from the direction of Ross 128 \u2014 a small, dim star\u2014 located about 11 light-years from Earth.<\/p>\n
Researchers picked up the mysterious signals on May 12 using the Arecibo Observatory, a huge radio telescope built inside of a Puerto Rican sinkhole, reports the Business Insider.<\/p>\n
In a blog post Abel M\u00e9ndez, director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico, wrote:<\/p>\n
\u2018We realized that there were some very peculiar signals in the ten-minute dynamic spectrum that we obtained from Ross 128.<\/p>\n
The signals consisted of broadband quasi-periodic non-polarized pulses with very strong dispersion-like features.<\/p>\n
We believe that the signals are not local radio frequency interferences since they are unique to Ross 128 and observations of other stars immediately before and after did not show anything similar\u2019, reports the Independent.<\/p>\n
The researchers are now planning to observe Ross 128 and its surroundings many more times, beginning on July 16.<\/p>\n
\u2018Success will be to find the signal again\u2019 at the star\u2019s location but not in surrounding directions, Professor M\u00e9ndez said.<\/p>\n
\u2018If we don\u2019t get the signal again then the mystery deepens.\u2019<\/p>\n
Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, told Business Insider that the group is \u2018well aware of the signals\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u2018The chances are high that they\u2019re terrestrial interference, in fact. That\u2019s really always been the case,\u2019 said Dr Shostak.<\/p>\n
