It was the third-largest opening weekend of the year, behind \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d and \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sony spent a hefty $175 million to make the film, in a rare deal with Disney-owned rival studio Marvel, but global sales have already surpassed $250 million, according to website boxofficemojo.com.<\/p>\n
The latest reboot of \u201cSpider-Man\u201d\u2014which has a 93 percent approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website\u2014stars Tom Holland as a young Peter Parker, mentored by Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man as he takes on the Vulture (Michael Keaton).<\/p>\n
Last week\u2019s No. 1 film, \u201cDespicable Me 3,\u201d came in second with a respectable $33.6 million, industry monitor Exhibitor Relations reported. In Universal\u2019s latest installment in the animated series, Steve Carell stars as the voice of bad guy-turned-protagonist Gru\u2014and his twin brother Dru. Kristen Wiig voices Gru\u2019s wife Lucy and \u201cSouth Park\u201d co-creator Trey Parker is evil villain Balthazar Bratt.<\/p>\n
In third spot was Sony\u2019s heist thriller \u201cBaby Driver,\u201d with Ansel Elgort (\u201cThe Fault in our Stars\u201d) starring as a gifted getaway driver who suffers from tinnitus\u2014ringing in his ears\u2014forcing him to play music on his iPod to concentrate when behind the wheel. It took in $13 million in its third week.<\/p>\n
Fourth was \u201cWonder Woman,\u201d at $9.8 million. The Warner Bros. superhero action film stars Israeli actress Gal Gadot as the Amazonian goddess-princess.<\/p>\n
And in fifth place was \u201cTransformers: The Last Knight\u201d from Paramount, with ticket sales of $6.4 million. The latest episode in that blockbuster series, heavy on visual effects, features actors Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro and Anthony Hopkins.<\/p>\n
