BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday said democracy was abolished in Bangladesh through the one-sided election on 5 January 2014.<\/p>\n
On the third anniversary of the 10th parliamentary polls, she tweeted that voting rights of the people of the country were scrapped by holding such a ballot.<\/p>\n
In this context, the BNP leader called on all to work for restoring democracy and voting rights.<\/p>\n
“On Jan 5 the day democracy was abolished & voting rights was scrapped, let’s devote ourselves to restoring democracy and voting rights,” Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister, said on her twitter handle.
\nAs many as 153 members of parliament were elected uncontested, before the election day, and the ballot was plagued by the opposition boycott and poor turnout.
\nThe BNP, which boycotted the polls, observes 5 January as ‘democracy killing day’ while the ruling Awami League celebrates it as ‘triumph of democracy day’.
