Aung San Suu Kyi and her government are \u201cburying their heads in the sand\u201d over the violence in Rakhine state, Amnesty International said Tuesday, criticising Myanmar\u2019s leader for failing to condemn the army\u2019s alleged abuses in a televised speech.<\/p>\n
The United Nations, rights groups, and a tide of Rohingya refugees pouring into Bangladesh have accused Myanmar\u2019s military of using bullets and arson to wage an \u201cethnic cleansing campaign\u201d against the Muslim minority.<\/p>\n
In her speech Tuesday, Suu Kyi expressed sympathy for the \u201csuffering of all people\u201d swept up in the violence but did not address accusations of ethnic cleansing.<\/p>\n
She instead said only that anyone guilty of rights abuses would be brought to justice.<\/p>\n
\u201cAung San Suu Kyi today demonstrated that she and her government are still burying their heads in the sand over the horrors unfolding in Rakhine State. At times, her speech amounted to little more than a mix of untruths and victim blaming,\u201d Amnesty said.<\/p>\n
The rights group blasted Suu Kyi for remaining \u201csilent about the role of the security forces\u201d, whom they have accused of being \u201cengaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing\u201d.<\/p>\n
The watchdog also criticised Suu Kyi\u2019s call for international observers to visit Myanmar to assess its troubles for themselves, citing her government\u2019s blocking of a UN fact-finding mission to probe alleged army atrocities in Rakhine.<\/p>\n
